Nomination Period for the Class of 2010 Kenan Fellows Now Open
Applications Deadline: January 24th, 2008
The Kenan Fellows Program is an innovative model to promote teacher leadership, address teacher retention and advance K-12 science, technology and mathematics education. Kenan Fellows are public school teachers selected through a competitive process to participate in a prestigious two-year fellowship, all while remaining active in the classroom.
During these two years, Kenan Fellows work in partnership with distinguished scientists, university faculty, and the NC Department of Public Instruction, developing curriculum and teaching resources that bring cutting-edge research into the hands of students. Kenan Fellows are scientists, inventors, authors and leaders in our classrooms bringing curriculum to life!
Potential Kenan Fellows will be nominated online this year. School administrators, community leaders, parents of students, and former Kenan Fellows may nominate candidates.
Nominators, please visit the Kenan Fellows Program website (http://www.ncsu.edu/kenanfellows/join/apply.htm) and click on the nomination form link in order to nominate an outstanding teacher for this prestigious fellowship.
Teachers, if you wish to be nominated, please contact an eligible nominator now so they can begin the process. Check the Nomination FAQs at (http://www.ncsu.edu/kenanfellows/join/apply.htm#nomination) for information your nominator will need to complete the online form.
Nominees will be notified by email and subsequently invited to complete an online application. Fellowships will be tied to regions of the state and, in some cases, only residents of certain counties may apply.
Over the two-year fellowship period, Kenan Fellows will receive a $10,000 stipend, use of a laptop, and graduate credit for completing their research project. In addition, Kenan Fellows will be collaborating with university and corporate researchers and interacting with other outstanding K-12 public school educators, all while remaining active in the classroom.

Bioprocessing and Biomanufacturing
Rick Lawless, Associate Director, Golden LEAF Biomanufacturing Training and Education Center (BTEC)
In this fellowship opportunity, a teacher will work closely with faculty and staff from the Golden LEAF Biomanufacturing Training and Education Center (BTEC) in the BTEC laboratories. As a result of this fellowship experience, the Kenan Fellow will modify existing modules and develop new curriculum that would lead to instructive and useful science laboratory modules and experiments to educate middle or high school students in biomanufacturing.
Biotech Drug Innovation
Dr. Basav Ghosh and Dr. Esther Alegria, Biogen Idec
Biogen Idec, one of the world’s oldest and largest biotechnology companies, has been at the forefront of the exciting world of biopharmaceutical discovery, development and manufacture.
A Kenan Fellow will partner with Biogen Idec mentors to develop cutting-edge curriculum featuring hands-on exercises that will better equip students to understand the biological, engineering and quality aspects of cellular production of biological molecules and evaluate the implications of these new processes in drug manufacturing. Students will be introduced to manufacturing processes for improving effective drugs.
Mentors from Biogen Idec will work with the fellow to develop a project tailored to the fellow’s interests and classroom needs. This fellowship is available for a middle or high school teacher interested in math or science.
