The faculty at the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics are hosting a high school science teachers’ social and professional development activity on Wednesday, Jan. 20th from 4:30-6:30 PM at NCSSM (1219 Broad Street, Durham, NC).

  • Physics teachers will do some electrostatics activities and “make & take” a kit for their classroom use.
  • Biology teachers will work on a lab to illustrate the differences in aerobic and anaerobic respiration using yeast.
  • Chemistry teachers will share favorite demonstrations.

NCSSM wants to provide an opportunity for like-minded teachers to share teaching tips and network with other teachers in the Triangle area. All interested high school science teachers are invited to attend.

Check out our latest teacher profile about Shannon Page, who teaches fifth grade at A.B. Combs Leadership Magnet Elementary School in Wake County. The article “Traveling the world, virtually: Project-based learning in elementary school” is the fourth in a series spotlighting teachers who use innovative instructional techniques.

This piece explores Ms. Page’s use of virtual field trips to achieve all of the NC Standard Course of Study goals and objectives for her fifth-grade class throughout the year.

She favors this project-based approach because “it’s rigorous and relevant. It teaches the children reasoning skills and requires them to take control of their own learning.”

Our goal for the series is to allow outstanding teachers to present, in their own words, successful instructional practices for the benefit of not only other teachers but also policy-makers, school administrators, and education researchers. Previous entries in the series include:
