“Discover Unseen Life on Earth” at Microbeworld
June 29, 2009We’ve heard a lot about some renegade microbes in the news lately. The Swine Flu hysteria closed down many schools across the country and continues to be an issue worldwide. With all the press that H1N1 has gotten, you might think that all microbes are harmful. In fact, the vast majority of microbes are not at all harmful, and many are downright helpful. At Microbeworld, you can discover the abundant positives of microbes.
This website presents a VAST amount of helpful resources for teaching and learning about microbes. The website is divided into several sections including, “Meet the Microbes,” “Meet the Scientists,” and “In the News,” among others. Within each of these organizational tabs, there are further divisions of information and resources. The resources offered range from articles to podcasts to videos, thus appealing to many learning styles. If students were doing a research project on microbes, this website would be a wonderful place to start.
For teachers, in the resource section, there is another large selection of helpful resources. There are educational links, blog links, and wiki links. Additionally, there are lessons for hands-on activities based on the information found on the website. Another appealing aspect, especially for teachers, is the focus on presenting information about careers involving microbes. This is one area of scientific career that I see being increasingly necessary in the future; one in which our current students will be an integral part. One more fun section of the website allows you to send an E-vite to a friend to check out the website, complete with pictures of microbes. Who wouldn’t want that type of virus in his or her inbox?
Since I can’t send you all an E-vite to visit the website, you’ll have to click on the link in this post and find out some more about those poor, misunderstood, much-maligned microscopic lifeforms called microbes.
