Everyone has a website these days — even people’s pets have a web presence. The the fact remains, however, that creating a site takes a bit of HTML know-how. Kompozer is trying to change all that. It’s a free, intuitive web-development application that, for the novice, works a lot like any old word processor, and for the savvy web designer, looks and acts much like Adobe Dreamweaver.

KompoZer covers all the basics you need to slap up a web page while at the same time allowing advanced users to take advantage of more involved aspects of web design like CSS. There is an integrated FTP client so you can even use KompoZer to load your files onto a server and edit in real time.

This is a download-and-unzip application — no installation required. I did some tests for web accessibility issues, and while you can certainly make accessible HTML, it doesn’t prompt you to do so, which is a tad on the disappointing side. The KompoZer team does seem to update the program often, though, and I sent them an email about it so it may accommodate this feature in the future.
